Not every TV is a smart TV, and not every home has fast internet. A pen drive (a USB flash drive) is still one of the easiest ways to watch videos on a big screen: cartoons for the kids on a long trip, a recipe or workout video in the kitchen, family videos for grandparents, or lectures in a classroom without Wi-Fi.
Almost every TV made in the last ten years has a USB port and a built-in media player. The trick is to give it a file it can play. This guide shows how to download YouTube videos in a TV-friendly format, how to prepare the pen drive, and how to fix the most common problems.
What You Need
- A computer (Windows, Mac or Chromebook), or an Android phone with a USB OTG adapter or a dual USB-C pen drive.
- A pen drive with enough space. A 16 GB drive holds roughly eight hours of 1080p video, or far more in 720p.
- A TV with a USB port. Look for "USB" printed next to the port, usually on the back or the side of the TV.
Step 1: Download the Videos as MP4
- Copy the YouTube video's link and paste it into the YouTube to MP4 page on Y2Mate Official.
- On the 🎬 Video tab, choose an MP4 quality. For a TV, 1080p (.mp4) is the safest high-quality choice; the next section explains why.
- Click Download, wait until the file is ready, and click Download again. Repeat for each video you want to watch.
Every file already includes the sound, so there is nothing to convert or merge afterwards. If you are new to downloading on a computer, our guide to downloading YouTube videos on a laptop or PC walks through it in detail.
Step 2: Pick a Quality Your TV Can Play
TVs are much fussier than computers. Their USB players only understand certain video formats, and that, rather than the resolution, is the usual reason a file will not play.
| Your TV | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Older or "HD Ready" TV | 720p (.mp4) | Plays on almost everything, and the files are small |
| Full HD TV | 1080p (.mp4) | Full sharpness in H.264, the format every TV supports |
| 4K TV that is a few years old | 1080p (.mp4) | Looks very good on a 4K screen and plays reliably |
| Recent 4K TV | Try 2160p (.mp4) | Plays if the TV supports the AV1 format; otherwise use 1080p |
Here is the background. On YouTube, 1080p and lower qualities are usually available in H.264, the most widely supported video format in the world. The 1440p and 4K versions mostly use AV1 or VP9, newer formats that save space but are only understood by newer TVs. That is why a 4K file can play perfectly on your laptop and show "unsupported file" on the TV. If you are not sure what your TV supports, download one short video with the 4K downloader as a test; if it does not play, switch to 1080p.
Step 3: Prepare the Pen Drive
TVs read pen drives formatted as FAT32, and most newer models also read exFAT. Many pen drives come formatted as FAT32, which has one important limit: no single file can be larger than 4 GB. If your computer says a file is too large for the destination, this is the reason.
- For files under 4 GB, which covers 1080p videos up to about an hour and a half, FAT32 is fine.
- For bigger files, such as long 4K videos, format the drive as exFAT if your TV supports it. Check the manual, or simply try it.
- Formatting erases everything on the drive, so copy anything you want to keep somewhere safe first.
To check or change the format on Windows, right-click the drive in This PC and choose Properties to check it or Format… to change it. On a Mac, use Disk Utility, where FAT32 is called "MS-DOS (FAT)".
Step 4: Copy the Videos to the Pen Drive
- Plug the pen drive into your computer.
- Open your Downloads folder, select the videos and drag them onto the drive (or copy and paste them).
- If a file name contains emojis or unusual symbols, rename it with simple letters and numbers. Some TVs show such names as boxes or question marks.
- Before unplugging, eject the drive safely: click the eject icon in File Explorer on Windows, or in the Finder sidebar on a Mac. This makes sure the files have been written completely.
From an Android phone: download the videos in your browser, connect the pen drive with an OTG adapter, open the Files app, select the videos in Downloads and choose Copy to › your USB drive. Our guide to downloading YouTube videos on Android covers the first part.
Step 5: Play the Videos on Your TV
- Plug the pen drive into the TV's USB port.
- Many TVs open their media player automatically. If yours does not, press Source or Input on the remote and choose USB, or open the TV's Media, Files or Videos app.
- Go to the Videos section, choose your file and press OK.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Unsupported file", or the video is not listed | Download the 1080p or 720p MP4 version instead of 1440p or 4K. |
| The TV does not see the pen drive | Format the drive as FAT32, try another USB port, or try a different pen drive. |
| "File too large" when copying | The drive uses FAT32, which has a 4 GB limit. Choose a lower quality or format the drive as exFAT. |
| Picture but no sound | Make sure the TV is not muted and its sound output (TV speakers or soundbar) is set correctly. MP4 files from Y2Mate Official carry AAC sound, which TVs support. |
| The video stutters | Copy the file to the drive again, or use the 720p version. Older TVs and slow pen drives can struggle with high-quality files. |
| Strange characters in file names | Rename the files using simple letters and numbers. |
If a particular TV still refuses a file, you can convert it on a computer with the free program HandBrake: open the video, pick the Fast 1080p30 preset and start the conversion. The result plays on practically every TV made in the last decade.
Music for the Car
Many car stereos also play music from a pen drive, but most of them only understand MP3. On the video page, open the 🎵 Audio tab and choose MP3 320kbps or MP3 128kbps. Our guide to downloading YouTube songs as MP3 explains the options.
As always, download only videos and music you have the right to keep, and keep them for personal use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch YouTube videos on a TV without internet?
Yes. Download the videos as MP4 on a computer or phone, copy them to a pen drive and play them through the TV's USB port.
Which video format plays on most TVs?
MP4 with H.264 video, which is what you usually get when you download 1080p or lower. Most TVs made in the last ten years play it.
Why does my 4K video not play on my TV?
YouTube's 4K files mostly use the AV1 or VP9 format, which many TVs cannot play from USB. Download the 1080p version instead.
What is the maximum file size for a pen drive?
A FAT32 drive cannot hold a single file larger than 4 GB. Drives formatted as exFAT have no practical limit, but not every TV can read them.
Can I do this with just my phone?
Yes. Download the videos on your Android phone, then copy them to a pen drive connected with an OTG adapter or a dual USB-C drive.
