Search the Play Store for a YouTube downloader and you will not find a real one. Google does not allow apps that download YouTube videos, so the "downloader apps" people recommend are APK files from other websites. Installing them means switching off one of Android's safety checks and giving an unknown app access to your phone, often in exchange for a stream of ads and notifications.
You do not need any of that. The browser that is already on your phone can save a YouTube video straight to your storage, in the quality you choose, with the sound included. This guide shows the exact steps, where the video ends up, which quality makes sense on a phone, and what to do when something goes wrong.
What You Need
- An Android phone or tablet with a browser: Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox, Edge or any other browser that can download files.
- The link to the video, or just its title. Y2Mate Official can search YouTube for you.
- Some free storage space. A ten-minute video takes roughly 100–200 MB in 720p, and the exact size is shown before you download.
There is no sign-up, no extension and nothing to install.
Step-by-Step: Download a YouTube Video on Android
- Copy the video link. In the YouTube app, open the video, tap Share and then Copy link. If you are watching in a browser, copy the address from the address bar instead.
- Open Y2Mate Official. In Chrome or any other browser, go to y2mate-official.com. Tip: in Chrome, tap ⋮ › Add to Home screen to get an icon next to your apps for next time.
- Paste the link. Long-press the box at the top, tap Paste, then tap the red download button. You can also type the video's title and pick it from the results.
- Choose the quality. The video page lists every available quality on the 🎬 Video tab, for example 720p (.mp4), with the file size next to it. Tap Download next to the one you want.
- Wait a few seconds. A small window shows "Please wait while the file is being prepared…". When it changes to "File ready!", tap the Download button in the window.
- Let it finish. Chrome shows the progress in the notification bar. When it is done, tap Open to play the video.
Every quality comes with sound. YouTube keeps the picture and the sound of HD videos in separate streams, and our server joins them into one file while it downloads, so you never end up with a silent 1080p video. If you are curious why that matters, read why some 1080p and 4K downloads lose their audio.
Where Does the Downloaded Video Go?
Android browsers save downloads in the Download folder of your phone's internal storage. You can reach the video in several ways:
- Gallery app: Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Realme and most other phones show downloaded videos in a Download album in the Gallery. It can take a moment to appear.
- Google Photos: open Collections (called Library in older versions) › On this device › Download.
- Files app: open Files by Google, or My Files on Samsung phones, and tap Downloads.
- Chrome: tap ⋮ › Downloads to see everything you have downloaded in Chrome.
The file is named after the video's title, so it is easy to recognize. To keep it somewhere else, use the Files app to move it into a folder such as Movies.
Which Quality Should You Choose on a Phone?
Higher is not always better on a small screen. Bigger files take longer to download, use more mobile data and fill your storage faster, and on a six-inch screen the difference between 1080p and 4K is impossible to see. As a guide:
| Quality | Size for 10 minutes (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 360p | 30–50 MB | Saving data and space: talks, lectures, cooking videos |
| 480p | 40–80 MB | Small screens and very limited storage |
| 720p | 100–200 MB | Most phones: sharp on any phone screen |
| 1080p | 200–350 MB | Large phones and tablets, or casting to a TV later |
| 1440p / 4K | 400 MB – 1.5 GB | Only if you will copy the video to a 4K TV or monitor |
Fast-moving videos such as sports and games sit at the top of each range. The exact size for your video is always shown next to each quality.
One more thing about the highest qualities: YouTube's 1440p and 4K files usually use the newer AV1 format. Phones from the last few years play it fine, but on an older phone the video may stutter or refuse to open. If that happens, download the 1080p version instead, which plays on practically every phone.
Downloading Shorts and Audio Only
YouTube Shorts work exactly the same way: tap Share › Copy link on the Short and paste it. You get the vertical video in its original quality, up to 4K when the creator uploaded it in 4K. There is a dedicated Shorts downloader page and a guide to saving Shorts in 4K.
If you only want the sound, such as a song, a podcast or a lecture, switch to the 🎵 Audio tab on the video page and choose MP3 or M4A. Audio files are about ten times smaller than 720p video. Our guide to downloading YouTube songs as MP3 on your phone explains which audio option to pick.
Common Problems and Quick Fixes
- The download failed or stopped halfway. Usually a weak connection. Switch to Wi-Fi if you can, go back to the video page and tap Download again.
- The download does not start, or the phone says storage is full. Free up some space or choose a lower quality.
- "Download limit reached. Try again in…" To keep the service fast for everyone, each connection can start only a few downloads within a short time. The message shows a countdown: wait for it to finish and tap Download again.
- The video is not in the Gallery. Open the Files app › Downloads, or Chrome › ⋮ › Downloads. Some gallery apps only show new files after a minute.
- The video does not play. Try a free player such as VLC, or download the 1080p or 720p version instead of 4K.
- "This video is private" or "age-restricted". These videos cannot be downloaded. Our guide to common Y2Mate errors and fixes explains every message.
Is It Safe?
Downloading in the browser is the safest way to save a video on Android, because nothing is installed and no app gets permissions on your phone. Y2Mate Official does not need an account, and you never have to install anything or allow notifications to download a video. If an advertising page opens in a new tab, simply close it and return to your download. For more detail, see how to tell whether an online downloader is safe.
Please download only videos you have the right to keep, such as your own uploads, videos with a Creative Commons license, or content the creator allows you to save, and keep them for personal use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download YouTube videos on Android without installing an app?
Yes. Copy the video link, paste it into Y2Mate Official in Chrome or any other browser, choose a quality and tap Download. The video is saved to your phone's Download folder.
Where are downloaded YouTube videos saved on Android?
In the Download folder of your internal storage. Most Gallery apps show it as a "Download" album, and you can always find it in the Files app under Downloads.
Is it free?
Yes. There is no subscription, no sign-up and no watermark on the video.
Will 1080p and 4K videos have sound?
Yes. Every quality is delivered as one file with both picture and sound.
Does it work in Samsung Internet, Firefox or Opera?
Yes. Any browser that can download files works. In some browsers the list of downloads is in the menu rather than the notification bar.
Can I download videos on mobile data?
